- St. Luke’s began doing Purity Retreats for their 7th grade youth in 2006 in response to
concerns of sexual activity that was reported by some of their youth. They use the materials “Sex as God’s Gift” by Mary Ronan, RN. The retreat is from Friday evening through Saturday early afternoon and includes six DVD sessions and one speaker. The speaker is often the most impactful session of the retreat as they have a mom from the congregation share about her experience as a teen mother. In 2010, St. Luke’s chose to purchase the Concordia Publishing House "Learn About Sex" books for each family participating in the 7th grade Purity Retreats – the “How to Talk Confidently with Your Child about Sex” book for parents and the “Sex and the New You” book for each youth. They added a parent discussion session at the beginning of the retreat. Pastor Tom met with the parents in a separate room to introduce the Concordia Publishing House books to the parents and show them some of the DVD material that the youth would be seeing during the retreat. They also used some segments from Mark Gungor and Pam Stenzel’s materials from “Sex, Dating, and Relating” in addition to the “Sex as God’s Gift” materials. (St. Luke’s – Wisconsin Rapids, WI)
- Offered a three session Human Sexuality class for parents during our Sunday morning
Adult Education hour in 2010 to present the learning event materials. Three families attended and we feel this is a good start. We plan to offer it again in the future. (St. Luke’s – Wisconsin Rapids, WI)
- Attempted to have the Concordia Sex Education series added to our church library. This
had met with some resistance from the library committee. We are writing up a resolution to present to them to try again to get the series in the library. Until that time, they are available in the DCE’s office. (St. Luke’s – Wisconsin Rapids, WI)
